Learning to Read and Beginning Readers

Each book on this list is a representative of an entire series. I am recommending the entire series.

If there is any complete reading program I would recommend, it would be All About Reading. I absolutely love this program. This program is phonetic and gives the child enough time to really learn each new rule before moving on to a new one. My son is enjoying this program and progressing rapidly using it. You can either use the entire program, or just the readers, or the readers and flash cards. Any way you choose to use it, it will serve you well. This is a fantastic program. The Bob Books are a fantastic phonetic reading series. Both of my children really enjoyed these. My daughter, who has an unbelievable memory, sped through them and moved on to readers instantly. My son needed more time and practice for each level and phonetic rule, and therefore needed the All About Reading books, which go slower and offer a lot more practice.

The Biscuit books are classic and beloved by many families. Both of my children adore Biscuit. I highly recommend the entire series.

I feel the same about Mittens as I do about Biscuit. Absolutely adorable and sweet and I recommend the entire series.

The Elson Readers are quite special and classic. The offer old fashioned and classic stories at a reading level accessible to your emerging reader. These books are beautiful and were treasured in our home.

There are a few levels. The primer level assumes your child is a beginning reader and has learned all his basic phonics, though not the more complicated blends.

As the levels increase, the difficulty does and the letters get smaller.

I recommend the entire series.

Little Bear is a delightful classic beginning reader series. Your child is sure to fall in love with all the characters in these books and feel nostalgic for them for many years to come.

(There is also a delightful children’s show based on the books)

The Adventures of Frog and Toad have delighted children for years. They are such a funny pair. Your children will love these two characters and be thrilled by their adventures. I recommend the entire series.

Written by the same author as Frog and Toad, these tales are so charming. My daughter loved them and drew many pictures of little mice after reading these books.

It is never too young to foster a love of non-fiction in your child and these DK readers are a great way to start! I highly recommend them.
